Gretzky Rookie Card

There are 2 Wayne Gretzky rookie cards….one from O-Pee-Chee and one from Topps. Which one is official?
Both are official
O-Pee-Chee cards were only sold in Canada until December 1991
Topps cards were only sold in the USA until February 1991 (Topps was the parent company of O-Pee-Chee from 1937 through 1992)
The main difference is that Topps card was only sold in the US, the back of the Topps card is dark grey which makes it difficult to read, the back of the Topps card is English only, and the Topps run was printed twice resulting in 17,600,000 sets
The OPC card was sold in Canada only, the reverse of the card is lighter, the back of the card contains both languages, and the OPC print run was a a triple run resulting in 11,700,000 sets
The OPC card is generally valued higher than the Topps card because
– there were fewer printed
– there are fewer in mint condition
– the demand is higher due to the above two
Prior to the 1990-91 card year, Canadians didn’t treat hockey cards as an investment, Americans always have. Canadian kids were more likely to use ths cards in bike wheels, play closest to the wall, etc which greatly decrease the value of the card
